Fango caught up with writer/director Jake (DAYS OF DARKNESS) Kennedy, who tipped us off to the new non-work-safe trailer (which you can seen below) for his horror flick PENANCE. Previously titled THE DEVIL’S DUNGEON, produced by Will (AUTOMATON TRANSFUSION) Clevinger and filmed last year in Los Angeles, PENANCE stars JEEPERS CREEPERS 2’s Marieh Delfino (pictured) as a stripper who falls into the hands of sadistic surgeon (Graham McTavish) with genital mutilation on his mind.

“The title changed from THE DEVIL’S DUNGEON to PENANCE since we believe it has far exceeded our own quality standards in terms of cast, performance and look,” Kennedy tells Fango. “So we wanted to steer away from a B-movie-esque moniker and more toward a cooler, more representative name. PENANCE means ‘the repentance of one’s sins,’ and that’s exactly what our bad guy is trying to do—and what he’s trying to make our heroine do against her will. So PENANCE sums up the film perfectly.”
As for the recut trailer, “The first one was done right after we had assembled our first cut of the movie,” Kennedy says. “It’s a good preview, but as you know, you create a whole new film in the editing room—which is what we did, so this new trailer now represents the new movie: cooler, meaner, bloodier and sexier. Be warned: This is an R-level trailer and includes gratuitous sexual imagery, bad language and extreme violence.”
Currently seeking distribution for the film, Kennedy says that since they “didn’t finish PENANCE in time to make the horror/Halloween [festival] deadlines, we’re going to focus on the spring/summer horror fests,” so genre fans should be able to get a peek soon. Curiosity from genre enthusiasts should be pretty high, thanks also to a horror-friendly cast that additionally includes Eve (WICKED LAKE) Mauro, Tracy (ZOMBIE HONEYMOON) Coogan, Jason (KILLER MOVIE) London, ALONE IN THE DARK II and BLOODWARS co-stars Jason Connery and Allison Lange, James (MAY) Duval and fright veterans Tony Todd and Michael Rooker.
As for future projects, Kennedy’s keen on delving further into horror, and is co-developing “a prime-time TV series about a high-flying corporate, single woman who gets bitten by a werewolf. The show’s about the struggle between her work life, social life and her occasional carnivorous dining habits,” Kennedy reveals. Additionally, he has “nearly finished a feature-length script based on my multi-award-winning, Fango-distributed short film WE ALL FALL DOWN, which I’m hoping to make my next feature.” An official website for PENANCE is just around the corner, so stay tuned for further developments.
