Bella Morte has become a solid fixture in the Gothic rock genre as one of the new touring and writing monsters of our subculture, creating solid, hard-hitting sounds that are unapologetic, at times brash and at others deeply inspirational. Their unique mix of Electronic, Goth, Deathrock, Punk and Metal make for a bittersweet and heavy blend of tracks that entrances people from multiple genres. Always attempting to adapt their style and never be stagnant, the act recently released BEAUTIFUL DEATH, an intriguing and deep new album that hearkens back to their more romantic and traditional Gothic rock roots.
BEAUTIFUL DEATH opens with the bands latest single for Metropolis records, "Find Forever Gone". Andy shows a softer and deeper side to his lyrical repertoire in this very slow and beautiful gothic dance track. "Can't Let This Die" opens with a slow electronic melody and then pulls you in for the killing riff, the heavier sound you expect from this gritty act. "Black Seas Collide" features heavy ripping guitar work combined with eerily dripping keyboards. Again we see the softer side of Andy's vocals in this very classic Goth riff. "Buried Within" is a harder hitting, faster tempo track with lightning paced synth, while "The End of the Day" is a more solemn and moving track. "Fades Like a Song" is a deep emotional ballad of love lost and burying past history, and "In The Dirt" starts with a crawling Deathrock lyrical riff that explodes into a punching frenzy.
"One Thousand Days" is an emotionally driving track drawing images of suicide, alienation, and depression. All too familiar themes, but this track's burning image of endurance against all odds is inspiring. "Burn the Sky" is another driving track with heavy guitars, combined with hard hitting lyrics which blend into an epic Gothic rock anthem. "Eternal" is an exploratory, experimental track with industrial synth and gritty guitar riffs, and carries a more hopeful tone than the prior tracks. "Nine Hours" opens with haunting piano tones, and is a heavenly close to this beautifully put together album.
Recent fans of Bella Morte who have been exposed to their break-out album BLEED THE GREY SKY BLACK might find the transition to a more romanticized traditional Goth album a hard switch. Still, the band creates an album that holds it's own with the most crepuscular Goth act, showcasing their ability to mix their traditional gritty guitar licks with deeply written intellectual lyrics (along with a softer side to Andy's traditional style). And while the sound of BEAUTIFUL DEATH is reminiscent of early Goth acts like Play Dead or Nosferatu, Bella Morte still retains its razor edge that's kept fans coming back for each new disc the band releases. With the act losing Gopal and Jordan earlier on, many fans felt that the band might lose some of its punch. Rest assured that the album BEAUTIFUL DEATH does not disappoint with all its romantic and creepy crawling beauty.

PAGAN | ON BLACK WINGS (Musick Review)When I initially received the assignment of covering the new PAGAN album ON BLACK WINGS I was a little unsure of what to expect. W.A.S.P. – BABYLON (Musick Review)Somewhere in the hard rock and metal cosmos, Blackie Lawless was granted the same passage as Overkill, Motorhead and AC/DC where recording the same album over and over again is considered his charm and not his stigma. Those following W.A.S.P. over the years will testify once Blackie Lawless officially...Read More...

Between the Buried and Me – THE GREAT MISDIRECT (Musick Review)You’re either for or against what Between the Buried and Me has done to grind metal. The form is no longer dictated by continuously forked-rhythm mandates which Napalm Death and Morbid Angel gorged themselves upon for years. Between the Buried and Me’s ALASKA opened up the possibility of new...Read More...

RAPPED AND TAGGED: CROSSWORM | MOUTH FULL OF DIRTCrossworm is one hell of a versatile Canadian, as evidenced by his latest release MOUTH FULL OF DIRT. MOUTH may be labeled dirtcore, but it's more a combination of a little self deprecation, an unhealthy load of angst and a taste of the macabre, all tangled up in the form of an impressive, emotional...Read More...

Andreas Kisser – HUBRIS I & II (Musick Review)Sepultura without the Cavalera brothers has been a tough sell for many despite the noble efforts of Andreas Kisser, Paolo, Jr., Derrick Green and current drummer John Dolabella. GRIND MADNESS AT THE BBC (Musick Review)Few (if any) radio shows could ever claim to challenge the legendary status of the late John Peel's THE PEEL SESSIONS on the BBC's Radio 1. Atreyu - CONGREGATION OF THE DAMNED (Musick Review)The metalcore and screamo explosion of the early 2000's brought with it an onslaught of bands that disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived. Suicide Silence – NO TIME TO BLEED (Musick Review)The music is as violent as the sanguinary images cased inside the packaging of Suicide Silence’s latest album NO TIME TO BLEED.
